With the Community Matters Scheme we help local charities every month.

Plastic Bag Fund Donations

The Falkland Islands Company along with other local retailers signed up to an introduction of a 5p charge on plastic carrier bags last year…

We are pleased to share that during the first year across The FIC a vast reduction in the usage of plastic bags amounting to some 70% was experienced, the total amount collected from the 5p charge in this time was £4,013.95.

The company advertised inviting local charities and good causes to apply for a share of these funds which we have added to and are now donating £5,000 in total, we are delighted to announce the awards as follows:

•    Lighthouse Seafarers Centre – £500.00

•    Falklands Xtreme Sports – £500.00

•    Falkland Islands Horse Owners Club – £1,000.00

•    Essence of Our Community – £1,000.00

•    Falkland Islands Hockey Association – £1,000.00

•    West Falkland First Responders – £1,000.00

The cheques were presented to the various charities by FIC staff from different departments.

“Thank you to the Falkland Islands Company for donating £500 to Falklands Xtreme Sports. Awesome news and this money will be put towards assisting to send a team away to the Plzen Challenge Cup, Czech Republic in February 2018. We can’t thank FIC enough for their continued support of the club and to help us achieve our dreams.”

– Marcus Morrison, Falklands Xtreme Sports.

“Firstly, can I offer sincere gratitude to FIC for the recent donation of £500 to the Lighthouse Seafarers Centre, I stated in my application that we needed to replace our ageing boiler at the Mission. The day before you presented us with the cheque the interruptions in power supply brought about the further demise of our boiler – so your generous donation couldn’t have come at a better time for us.”

– Maurice Lake, Lighthouse Seafarers Centre.

“Our current fundraising aim is to purchase a large mobile training corral, where horse owners can work with their horses, train young animals, and also provide an enclosed area for beginner riders to learn the basics. We are delighted and very grateful to receive this donation and will get the mobile corral ordered and shipped in the near future.”

– Farrah Peck, Falkland Islands Horse Owners Club.

“We would like to say a big thank to the Falkland Islands Company for this generous £1,000 donation. This will help go towards sending three of our Elite Youth players, to represent the Falkland Islands All-Stars adult team that has been invited to participate at the Castillo Country Club, in Costa Rica’s 1st International Ice Hockey Tournament.”

– Grant Budd, Falkland Islands Hockey Association.

“The West Falkland First Aiders are extremely grateful for this generous donation from the FIC Plastic Bag Fund. It will enable us to buy some much needed equipment for Hill Cove, allowing a quicker response to incidents across the island. We also plan to buy some training mannequins so that we can practice our CPR skills between our yearly training sessions.”

– Steve Dent, West Falkland First Responders.

“On behalf of Essence of the Community we would like to say a huge thank you to the FIC for their generous donation of £1,000. This will be used for the playpark equipment at St Mary’s Walk where we hope to transform this area into a superb family-orientated space in the heart of our community. The funds will be put towards the trampoline.”

– Karen Lee, Essence of Our Community.
